Being Thankful in Everything

The Bible tells us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” in 1 Thessalonians 5:18. A lot of times it’s hard to be thankful. We go about our lives and get complacent. We take things for granted. I mean, it’s easy to do. We all do it. You get in a wreck and are so consumed with the fact that we broke our car that you don’t appreciate the fact that you are safe and unharmed.

Justin and I try our best to remind each other to not let life’s circumstances upset us. For all we know, God could be keeping us from something worse. In December, I was following with Justin to get the oil changed in our truck. He stopped at a yellow light so that we wouldn’t be separated and I didn’t see him. Needless to say, it was not pretty. We ended up totaling two of our three vehicles. Neither of us got harmed. Not even a scratch. Instead of getting mad because we just lost our daily drivers, we both were just thankful to be alive. The wreck could have easily seriously harmed either of us.

You can be sure that we thanked God for protecting us from such a potentially fatal event. Instead of walking away without so much as a scratch, things could have ended very differently. It could have been easy to get caught up in the stress of everything going on to forget to take time out and thank God for protecting us.

Being thankful in all circumstances is to be thankful even when it’s hard to find something to be thankful for. I mean, what good comes out of wrecking your two main vehicles? What purpose does that serve? Rather than taking that stance, we looked at it like God was protecting us from something else. We had a trip planned for two weeks after when we wrecked. It could have been that something bad could have happened if we’d taken one of those vehicles. We will never know.

Whatever the reason, a bad situation allowed us to go on our trip without any problems. Our insurance closed our claim in less than a week. We borrowed a vehicle from out in-laws until we could get a second vehicle (due to our jobs we have to have separate cars). We were blessed enough to be able to buy another vehicle, that in the long run is better than the ones we lost.

What could have been a devastating situation, ended up working out for our good. If you think about it, God tends to do that more often than we realize.
