As LaBre mentioned in an earlier post we bought two camera’s last year one a Canon t6i DSLR and the other a Sony a6000 mirrorless camera. The Sony is by far the one I prefer to use. In my opinion, you cannot find a better camera to use while hiking or well just about anything.
Mirrorless cameras are very similar to DSLRs however they do not use a mirror. Instead, the camera’s sensor is directly exposed to incoming light. They also have an LCD viewfinders instead of an optical viewfinder like you would find on normal DSLRs.
Since mirrorless cameras do not have the mirrors they are able to be smaller and slightly lighter than the comparable DSLR. This is why I personally prefer the Sony over our Canon. With its small size, it is great for any adventure. I just throw it in my bag without any worries. I have even been able to stash it in the water bottle holder on my hiking backpack.
If you have ever hiked with a DSLR you know the pain that comes from hauling it around your neck all day. While the Sony is not extremely light it is noticeable when you have been out on the trail all day. The Sony feels more rugged in the hand than the Canon because its body is made from metal while the DSLR is made from a plastic composite.
The camera is able to take simply gorgeous photos with ease. With an amazing auto mode and a ton of autofocus points, this camera is simply brilliant. I normally only use the Sony on auto mode when hiking just because it does such an amazing job. On many occasions, I have been able to get great images of a moving target that I would not have been able to get if I was trying to use manual mode. The Sony also allows you to take pictures at 11 frames per second. This ability comes in so handy when on the trail, you can pretty much freeze time.
I would like to mention that the Canon is a great camera and it works very well. I do have some things that I do not like about it as much as the Sony, but it is still great. However, if you are looking to buy a new camera and you spend a lot of time outside I would definitely recommend the Sony a6000.
