As you can see from the main picture on this post, I have naturally curly hair. Sometimes it can be annoying and other times it’s the best thing in the universe. If you have curly hair, you know that everyone’s curly hair is not the same. There are so many types of curly hair. With that comes many different types of tips and tricks for how to help your hair make the best curl possible. So many of the tips I’ve found for curly hair is for ethnic curly hair. It has been a chore to find tips that work for my curly hair.
In order to better help you determine if my tips and tricks will work for you, I am going to tell you a little about my hair. If left alone to its own devices, it will just be a wild kinky wave of a mess. It can’t get enough product. Oils, hairspray, conditioners, any product really, even water. My hair just soaks it up and asks for more. My curly hair is frizzy no matter. I’ve just learned to embrace the fluff. I’ve also learned to keep trying different things. Different things to help make my curls the healthiest they can be. If one technique doesn’t work that doesn’t mean the next won’t. You have to keep trying until you find what works for your curls.
1. Water
Curly hair is naturally dry. No matter what type of curly hair you have chances are it’s dry. Wetting your hair between washes or when styling has been one of the most reoccurring tips I’ve found. It’s also been a huge help in taming my wild curls. As any fellow curly hair person will tell you, curls can be a beast to try and tame. Wetting your curls with a spray bottle helps revamp your natural curl. If I don’t wet my hair between washes it just keeps getting frizzier and that causes it to weaken the curl pattern. Making it straighter and straighter but not straight enough to be straight. It just turns into a fluffy half straight half curly mess.
2. Conditioner
Since curly hair is naturally dry it needs conditioner. Lots and lots of conditioner. Water is great for hydrating your hair but curly hair needs all the help it can get. So far the best conditioner I’ve found for my hair is Renpure Coconut Milk Nourishing Conditioner. This conditioner has no sodium chloride, no sulfates, no dyes, no harsh salts, no parabens, and no gluten. I’m going to be honest with you I’m not 100% sure on why gluten would be in conditioner. But this conditioner doesn’t have it. More importantly, it doesn’t have those other things. Just like everything else as science has progressed, we decided to add things to our conditioners. The fewer chemicals we add to, not only our conditioners, but foods, and everything else, the better. Not only is this a great conditioner but it also does well as a leave-in conditioner too. To use as a conditioner as a leave-in, my suggestion is to not rinse it out of the ends of your hair fully. This ensures you don’t put too much in.
3. Styling Product
There are so many different techniques for styling curly hair. Most say to use 2-3 different type of products. Oils, Curl Cremes, Gels. There are so many options. Since my hair eats oils, curl cremes, and gels for breakfast, I’ve tried lots of them to try and find one that works. Since my hair loves to consume products before I even leave the house, I try my best to not spend a lot of money on them. I’ve tried the expensive products but my hair doesn’t care how much I spent in an attempt to tame it. It just consumes them like they are nothing. Recently, I’ve found BB Oil Moisturizer, Hair Lotion With Castor Oil and Aloe. This stuff is amazing!!! Oh, my word! Who knew hair lotion was a thing? Not me! But man I’m glad I do now. This stuff is actually one of the only things that actually work to take my wild hair. It calms my frizz and enhances my curl like nothing else I’ve ever tried.
Please excuse the awful mirror pictures but I wanted to show you just how amazing this hair lotion is!
4. Styling
Just because you have natural curls does not mean that you can’t use a curling iron or wand to help your end result. If some of the curls around my face are flat, it’s not uncommon for me to curl them. I found a curling iron that is similar in size to my natural curl pattern and I touch them up. I mean, we all love our curls even though they give us a terrible time at times, sometimes they need a little extra help. It’s okay to give them that help. We shouldn’t feel bad about it.
Hopefully some of these tips and tricks I’ve picked up help you as you learn what works for your hair. Thank you so much for reading!
