Bass Fishing Adventures

Since Justin is an avid fisherman and I like the water, we go fishing a lot. Especially since Justin is working on getting his skills back up. This last year and a half have been a little crazy. Justin didn’t get to fish as much as he’d like. Meaning now we are fishing pretty much every day that we don’t have church. Even if rain is in the forecast. Being in East Tennessee though, it could call for rain all day and you not see a drop. It could even say sunny skies all day and next thing you know it is flooding. One of Justin’s favorite fish to fish for is bass. We like to catch all fish and really don’t care what kind as long as we catch something, but bass is his favorite.

Where we live we have several options of where to fish all within 30 minutes or less. We try to not to go to the same place several days in a row. This is so we can learn how we need to fish each of those bodies of water. Also so we can explore new areas of the water since we don’t go out very long since we are on the kayaks. We decided to try a new spot since we had to drive by it to go by it on our way to see MomLee and DadLee. It was a very windy day out so once on the water we decided to change our game plan. In an attempt to shelter ourselves from the worst of the wind we heading into a cove in the opposite direction we’d planned on fishing.

We’d originally set out to catch a ton of bluegill along the rocky shoreline. Since the wind had other plans for us we ended up in an area with tons of grass in the water. Thankfully we were prepared and had other rods with us so we could fish for larger fish. As soon as we’d enter the cove I saw Justin using his larger pole. Justin is the fisherman in this relationship, so I usually follow his lead. I grabbed my larger spinning pole and started fishing. We didn’t plan on being out long so we went out with the bare minimum. Justin had only brought one extra lure for us. With this area being grassy, Justin decided to switch to the spinnerbait (the one extra lure we’d brought). Meaning I was left with the crankbait.

I learned quickly that crankbaits don’t do so well in grassy water. It was nothing but tossing my lure out and pulling back in the grass. Like I said before though, Justin is the fisherman. I am just mostly out there to play in the water. Justin knew exactly what the grassy water meant so he went to work with the spinnerbait. After a few minutes, he caught a small bass!

He kept up the work and next thing we knew he’d snagged a HUGE bass! We bet it was probably 5lbs! We didn’t have a scale on us so we don’t know for sure. But man that bass was as long as Justin’s torso and was so heavy!

Justin went on to catch another smaller bass. After a while of him fishing and me catching nothing he let me use the spinnerbait. I’d never used a spinnerbait before. I had no clue what I was doing. Justin coached me on how to use it. Before I could catch anything though it started pouring rain! We paddled as fast as we could to try and get back to our truck. By the time we made it back we were soaked through and through. Absolutely drenched!

Of course, since we’d found where at least one giant bass lived, we decided to go back there again the next day. Having fished that area already we were better prepared. We both had spinnerbaits tied on and headed straight for our spot. The wind was blowing hard so we headed past our spot some and fish down the bank as we drifted. After over an hour of me not catching anything and Justin only catching two small basses, I’d settled on listening to music and casually fishing. Just as I was giving up something caught my line! I finally realize why people like bass fishing so much! Bass put up a good fight! It was a blast fighting it and getting it in my boat!

Justin was fishing a good ways away from me so I reeled the bass in, unhooked it, took a picture with it and released it all before Justin got to me. Sadly not but a few minutes after that the weather started to change on us. We decided to call it and head back in. We got everything loaded up and headed home just before a storm hit.
