Honey, Let’s Buy a Camera!

If you are anything like my husband and me, you typically dream of buying something for a long time before actually buying it. Whether that’s due to having to save up for it, or because you just worry that once you make the purchase you won’t use the item as much as you want. Last year we decided to buy a nice camera because both of us have been wanting one for YEARS and we were finally at a place financially that spending what we felt was a lot of money on one item was justifiable in our minds.

When we decided that we were definitely buying a camera, I put Justin to work on finding out which one we’d enjoy best. We knew we wanted a DSLR type camera but once we got to looking at what was on the market, we found that a new type of professional grade camera had come on the scene, Mirrorless. At first, we were torn between which one we should buy but after doing more research, Justin determined that the Mirrorless would be the best one for us for what we planned on using it for (taking landscape pictures and capturing family events). Now we are not trying to be professional photographers, well not yet anyway. We just wanted a really nice camera to capture all of life’s wonderful moments. We ended up buying the Sony a6000. We purchased the bundle that came with two lenses.

Me being me, anytime Justin and I went out to use the camera, I always wanted him to be able to use it. This is partly because I am a people pleaser and I just love watching him have fun and learn how to use the camera to get the look he is going for. This caused Justin to feel bad thinking he was hogging the camera, so being the sweet man he is, he came up with a solution. Get another camera!!! This time we opted for a DSLR one so that way we would have more options for lens upgrades. The Mirrorless cameras are more expensive than DSLR lenses right now and we wanted to be able to be able to purchase more lenses without spending a lot. Don’t get me wrong, DSLR lenses are not cheap but the ones we are looking into for upgrades are significantly cheaper for DSLR cameras than for the Mirrorless cameras. We purchased a Canon t6i with videographer bundle because it came with two lenses and a microphone attachment. I mean you never know when you will need to video something and why not do it in style?

What is great is that Justin likes the Sony better than the Canon for the types of pictures he wants to take and I like the Canon better than the Sony for the type of pictures I want to take! It could not have worked out better for us. Both of us had worried that we’d both end up liking the same camera and returning one of them was not really an option in our minds due to how much we spent and how much we’d lose due to the restocking fee. I mean we probably could have resold one online for about the same price we spent but thankfully it did not come to that.

Now when we go out to for walks or are on trips, Justin and I both can take pictures and not have to worry about sharing our camera or feeling like we are hogging it. We can just simply enjoy our time out capturing pictures together. I still tend to stop taking pictures of my own to show Justin what I think would be a nice shot so that he can capture it or I set my camera down completely to be silly and be his model. We spent a lot more money on cameras than we originally set out to but it all worked out for the best in the end.
