As a new parent and a part-time photographer, I take a lot of photos of my child. Using my photography skills and some things I’ve learned since having a child, I’ve figured out a few tricks to help me out while taking photos of my little one. And now I would like to share these tricks with you!

Find A Shaded Spot

Shooting in direct sunlight will cause your little one to have their eyes closed more than open. It’ll also cause weird shadows on their face that distort the picture. You don’t want just any random shaded area though. You need a spot that is evenly shaded so that your picture is lit evenly. There’s nothing worse than going through photos to find out there is a random spot on the photo that is much brighter than the rest of the photo. Making that the only thing you see when you look at the picture.

Take As Many Photos As Possible

Little ones are fast! In order to make sure you capture a good picture, you will want to take as many as you can. In the mess of all the closed eyes and blurred pictures, there is bound to be a gem! For older children that listen well, you can start to slow down on how many pictures you take. But for the littles that are freshly mobile, take lots of pictures as quickly as you can!

Make Sure They Are Rested and Full

One of the best ways to ensure you get pictures of a happy baby is to make sure your baby is happy! Wait until after you’ve fed your little one after they wake up then pull that camera out and get to work! If your little one is hungry or tired, you’re more than likely just going to get pictures of them crying. While those are cute, we are all after those sweet little smiles.

Get On Their Eye Level

Most importantly, get on their eye level. This will completely change the feel of the photo! When you take pictures of adults, you are usually taking them at their eye level. You want to do the same for your little one too.
