21 Day Challenge – Exercise Update

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. Justin and I wanted to test this theory by going through a series of 21 Day Challenges. Our first challenge was 21 Day of Exercise. Justin had found a good plan for us to follow for the weekdays and we would just do our own exercise plan on the weekends. Now when we started this, Justin had talked some big game saying he was going to do better than me on this challenge. Now that really made me step up my game.

When we first started this challenge, we were good at following the plan we’d picked out. Day 2-3 were the worst for me. My legs were sore! After that, it was smooth sailing. Now I do want to add that we did tweak the exercise plan just slightly to accommodate some of our limitations. I have an issue with my right wrist that makes them difficult for me to do as many standard push-ups as I would like. I tend to go for the girly push-ups or doing push-ups against counters because it takes some of the stress of my wrist.

When we started week two of this plan, Justin began to have a lot of overtime at work. He was staying late two days a week and on those days, it would be hard for him to get in a workout. At this point, we started going from doing the exercise plan to just doing a few exercises of our choice. This was just to ensure that we were still doing some sort of exercise to keep up without challenge. This could mean that one day we decided our work out was 30 push-ups or 50 squats rather than the whole regime we’d picked.

Justin had overtime for remaining time on our challenge and he did forget to do some sort of exercise one of the days. The work he was doing at work was very labor intensive so it’s kind of a coin toss as to “Did Justin Complete His 21 Day Challenge?” I personally, give him credit for completing the challenge. Since the challenge has ended though, I’ve done my best to keep up with doing some sort of exercise each day still. This mostly consists of doing push-ups against a counter or random squats whenever the urge strikes me.

Throughout out this challenge, I have learned that if you really want to get some sort of physical activity in, you will. In order to make sure I never forgot to work out, I have done lunges while walking from one section of my office to another. I have done squats while I waited for the printer to finish printing. I have done planks while waiting on the laminator to finish. If you truly want to work out and be more active, you will.

I understand that not everyone works in an environment that they can do those sorts of exercises at work. What you can do though, is when you are on your way to the kitchen to refill your water, do some lunges. When you get to the kitchen, do some squats or push-up against your counter. The point of this challenge, for Justin and I, was for us to just be more active. Due to the cold weather here, we have not been as active as we’d like to be. So we’ve been doing our best to do some activity to help us be healthier.

Now that our 21 Days of Exercise is complete, we have spun the wheel of our LuckyRoulette App and chosen our next 21 Day Challenge.
