What Do You Have To Be Thankful For?

As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, people are reflecting on the things they are thankful for. That being the case, I wanted to take a little time today and review what the Bible says about being thankful. All throughout the Bible, it talks of giving thanks and being thankful. But have you ever stopped to consider what we are supposed to be thankful for?

I mean Colossians 4:2 (NIV) says:

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful, and thankful.”

But what are we supposed to be thankful for? Let’s take a look at a few more verses to figure it out!

1. Give thanks because His love endures forever.

1 Chronicles 16:34 (NIV)

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

One reason to be thankful is that God is good and His love endures forever. So many times we think of God’s love for us like we do the love of others for us. Limited and conditional. That is not the case. God loves us no matter what. You are never too far away for His love to reach you. That alone is reason enough to be thankful.

2. He meets all your needs.

2 Corinthians: 9:14-15 (ASV)

“While they themselves also, with supplication on your behalf, long after you by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you. Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.”

What is this unspeakable gift? I asked the same thing! In order to find out, I went and read the full chapter.

In verses 8-10, Paul says

“And God is able to make grace unto you; that ye, having always all sufficiency in everything, may abound unto every good work: as it is written, He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the poor; His righteousness abideth for ever. He that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness:”

This verse tells me that God is going to take care of everything we need. In Matthew 6, the Bible tells us that we don’t need to worry about anything. We don’t need to worry about the food we will eat. The clothes we will wear. We are reminded that God cares more for us than the birds of the air. If the birds don’t worry about their needs, why should we? God will take care of us even more so than he takes care of the birds.

3. Just because

1 Thessalonians 5:18

“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

If you read this chapter, it tells you that no matter what is happening, you should give thanks. We should strive to build each other up. To encourage one another. Acknowledge those who work hard. Warn the idle. Encourage the disheartened. Help the weak and be patient with everyone. The list goes on more but to save some time I’ll stop there. If you’d like to read the full chapter, click here. When we build each other up and help the weak, it helps give us perspective. It helps us to be thankful for what we have and remember all that God has done for us.

Thank you for reading!

My hope is that this post helps remind you to have a thankful spirit. Not only during Thanksgiving but always. There are so many things in life that we have to be thankful for. As Christians, we know that God will supply all of our needs. His love endures forever! And most of all, no matter what, if we are following after God’s will in our life, everything will be okay. We don’t need to worry about anything. We just need to focus on being the person God called us to be and encourage others to do the same.
