Why I Paint – Or Try to At Least

I have always liked to be creative. Through the years I’ve found different ways to express that creativity. I’ve attempted to fix hair, draw, sew, make brooches, and most recently, paint. This all started due to the new trend of “Painting with a Twist”. Now I don’t drink so going to one of those classes does not appeal to me. The classes make painting look so easy and fun though that I had to try. So naturally, off to Hobby Lobby I went. I got a simple pack of sample brushes, a small paint set, and a painting notepad.

For my first attempt at painting, I tried a basic landscape of mountains. This did not turn out how I wanted at all. To me, it looked like a child’s painting. I then tried to make it better by adding some fall colors to the mix. That did not help, it made it look like the mountains were on fire. So I had to try to take it back to a lush green mountainscape. That still did not turn out how I wanted so I decided to let that painting go and move on to hopefully greener pastures.

Through some trial and error, I have been able to create some pieces that I am happy with. However, I am nowhere near as good as I’d like to be but painting is relaxing to me. So far my favorite objects to paint have been flowers and abstract. A strange combination, I know.

To me, the most fun part of painting is spreading the paint across the canvas. There are times I just want to do that and not worry about the outcome. Which is why abstract painting is so much fun. Flowers, however, are just too pretty to not try to paint. Honestly, if I could have fresh flowers all the time, I would. Any flowers. I love them all. I’ve not mastered painting them as of yet but that does not stop me from trying.

After trying to paint a few different things, I know a few more items I’d like for painting. I can see this being a long lasting hobby that I come back to time and time again. I’m not sure that I’ll ever be a “good” painter but I know it makes me happy and it a good stress reliever.

I write this for anyone who like me really enjoys an activity but thinks they are not the best at it. Through my painting, I have found that being good at an activity is not what is important. The most important thing is that you enjoy what you do no matter what it is or how good you are at it. If you have not found the activity that you enjoy and find relaxing I hope that you give as many things as possible a try until you are able to find your thing! I recommend you try something you have always wanted to do, but have worried that you wouldn’t be good at it. Just remember it is never about the outcome it is about the journey you take to get there.
