Justin’s Travel Bucket List

LaBre recently wrote about her travel bucket list, which in turns means that I must also write about mine. Unlike my lovely wife, I am more interested in seeing what this country has to offer before I even think about going anywhere else. I have two separate list one that is for things that could be completed on weekend trips and another that have trips that will be a week or more.

It is worth mentioning that given the opportunity I would prefer to drive to any of the places that are listed instead of flying. I know this sounds odd to most people since flying is normal and no it is not because I am afraid of flying. We actually are flying to Colorado for a work trip/vacation. I actually want to drive so I can see as much of this country as possible. It may take longer, but I feel that getting to see all the little things you would miss while flying would be worth it.

Short Trips:

1. Roanoke, Va.

I have wanted to visit Roanoke for a while especially after watching the movie A Walk in The Woods. They highlight an overlook that is on the Appalachian Trail called McAfee Knob. It is an amazing overlook where the rock sticks out over the edge. It is only about a 4-mile round trip hike, but due to the 4-hour one-way drive, it would have to be an overnight trip. Another reason I would like to visit Roanoke is that it is the home of Black Dog Salvage the store featured on the show Salvage Dawgs. LaBre and I found this show one day and were instantly hooked and have wanted to visit ever since.

2. Chickamauga Lake

This is strictly a fishing trip. I have wanted to take a trip to fish this lake ever since I saw people fish this lake and catch some really large bass. We really just have never found the time to take a trip like this, but maybe we will get the opportunity to go this fall and if so we will definitely have to write a post about the experience.

3. Stone Mountain, Ga.

The name pretty much says it all on this one, it is just a giant stone mountain in Georgia. However, it seems like it would be an awesome sight worth seeing. This is another one of those trips that would benefit from an overnight since it takes a bit of a drive to get there. It offers a few hiking trails and great views. It also has a nice downtown area and a lake close by.

Long Trips:

1. Colorado

The state that I have wanted to visit the most is definitely Colorado. The state offers everything I love or just find interesting. Everything from fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, to skiing and snowboarding. All those things can be done in very close proximity, which makes it even better. Thankfully we are going to be able to take this trip very soon. My job is sending me to Denver in the winter for training. Then we are getting to stay an extra week after that.

2. Alaska

Alaska has infatuated me for a long time, it is the wildest state in the United States. Fishing would be the first thing on my list if I was visiting Alaska. Preferably something off the beaten path and deep in nature. I would have to visit Katmai National Park, more specifically Brooks River Camp where you can safely watch brown bears catch salmon in the river. I would also try to see moose, from a distance. If I was able to drive to Alaska that is what I would prefer because I would get to see so much of this country and some of Canada.

3. Arizona

I have wanted to visit the desert for a long. Since I have not really left the South I have never been in a desert environment. I would love to see cactus and the strange animals that inhabit that environment in person. Visiting the Grand Canyon would be the highlight of a trip to Arizona. I have seen it in pictures thousands of time, but I cannot imagine what it must look like in person.

4. Maine

The east coast is packed with history from the founding of The United States. Going to Maine would mean that we would get to trail up the east coast and take some side trips to see the many historic places on the route. The end point of the drive up would be Acadia national park. It is a beautiful park on the coast in Maine. It is also known as a great place to see Moose, which as I mentioned in the blurb about Alaska is something I would love to see in the wild.
