Every Family Needs A Game Night

Recently my wife and I have been going to my parent’s house at least once a month to have a game night. I have to say it has been hilarious and truly more fun than I would have ever imagined it would be. Sometime my younger brother will even bless us with his presence and play a game or two with us. Every time we have a night like this we probably spend more time cutting up and laughing then we do playing the actual games.

It is amazing to me the funny things that happen when you are just playing games. Whether someone starts telling jokes or one of us get completely lost in the game and manages to kill the game. I have learned that it is impossible to be mad about losing when your wife and dad skip you three times in a row while playing UNO and do not even realized they did it.

So far we have mainly stuck to various card games like UNO, Rook, and Cheat. UNO and Cheat are very easy to learn and a blast to play since your goal is to do all you can to beat everyone else at the table. Both games also allow you be a little bit sneaky and make you feel great when you win. Rook, on the other hand, is just a little bit harder to learn, but once you get the hang of the way it works, it is a blast. This game is played in teams, but since you cannot tell your teammate what your cards are, things tend to get pretty interesting.

Even though we have mainly been playing card games there are many great board games that I think would be a great addition to the family night. One game that has definitely captivated my interest lately is called the Hearing Things Game. In this game, one player reads a phrase from a card such as “Pigeons like to cuddle.” Another player wears a pair of noise canceling headphone and tries to guess what the other player said. The best part of this game is that you never know what the player guessing is going to say. I hope to get this game soon and you can bet there will be another post documenting the guesses my family throws out!

What I truly enjoy more than the laughs or even the winning, is the time spent together as a family. In our always-connected world, it is nice to put down the smartphones get away from the TV and do something that requires you to pay attention to one another. Plus when you get a group of people together, especially crazy ones like mine, that all are all trying their hardest to win something funny is bound to happen every time. Plus the small victory of winning a game is hard to beat!

I really recommend that you try to start a game night with your family or your friends. I believe that it is one of the best ways to bond as a family and to make some memories that will last a lifetime. The only difficult part is calling it a night and going home! If you know of any great games I didn’t mention please let us know, and we will give them a try and maybe they will be mentioned in a future post. As always, thanks for reading! Be sure to check back soon for more posts!
