Sometime last year I decided to start carrying a small Gideons Bible with me everywhere. A Gideons Bible is just a small pocket size Bible that only includes the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. The Gideons organization normally hands them out for free at events across the country. Sometimes you can even find them in used bookstores for around a dollar.
Like many Christians, today I have multiple different Bible apps on my phone. However, I found that I did not read out of them as much as I would like to. I mainly treated them like most of the apps on my phones and just had them sit on the home screen.
Bible apps work great though depending on what you are using them for. If I ever want to look up a verse I go straight to my phone. Many also include daily devotions that will even remind you to read them every day. Plus most of them are free!
The one downside I have discovered about the Gideons Bible is that it does not include the full Old Testament. I have currently been using it to read the New Testament, but once that is completed I will need to find a small copy of only the Old Testament to read through from time to time. I have still yet to find a full copy of the complete Bible that is small enough to carry all the time, but I do believe that at least having some of God’s word with you is better than none.
Personally, I have found that when it comes to just reading through the bible I do not like the digital version as much as a traditional paper copy though. I tend to always get distracted by something else when I open my phone, random notifications, or texts while trying to read. Then I found an old Gideons Bible at home and decided I would carry it with me everywhere I go.
I have noticed myself reading more and more of the Bible every day. Instead of pulling out my phone when I get bored, I reach for my Bible. I have found myself reading way more than I would have on my phone simply because there are fewer distractions. I have to say that it is nice to read your Bible outside of the house and not have texts popping down and blocking your scripture.
The feeling of having God’s word close to you at all times is amazing. I have always been the person to keep a Bible in my car and one in the backpack I take to work. I personally find it to be a great comfort to always have God’s word with an arms reach.
If you have a desire to grow closer to God and want to read more of His word, I highly recommend getting a pocket size Bible and carrying it with you all the time. It is easy to say you will just dedicate more time to read the Bible on your phone, but we all know the destructions that come with smartphones.
