3 Great Christian Fiction Books

Anyone who knows me, knows I love to read. Sadly I have not been reading as much as I would like to. If you read our previous post about 21 Days to Form a Habit, you know that we are working through a series of challenges to help us refocus our time and energy on things we find to be more productive.  I am hoping that our latest challenge of 21 days of no TV will help get me back in the groove of reading on a regular basis. Being the huge book nerd that I am, I am always on the lookout for good books and authors. As a Christian, it can be hard sometimes to find books that are not only interesting to read but also are not filled with sex, drugs, cussing, and many other immoral things that I don’t want to fill my mind with.

Due to some great friends who have great taste in books, I was introduced to Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti. If you look at my bookshelf you will see that those authors take over about half of my space. If I find one of their books while out and about, I’ll end up buying it about 95% of the time. Thankfully, Justin loves them too so it doesn’t matter if we buy every single one of their books. Over the past year, we have accumulated about 25 of their books total.

Monster by Frank Peretti

Monster is about a guy named Reed Shelton who organizes a survival weekend for him and his wife Beck. He hired the best guide in the region and they meticulously trained, studied and packed their gear for the trip. Little did they know that surviving the elements would become the least of their problems. The first night of their camping trip, unearthly wails pierced the calm of the forest. Then someone, no something, emerges from the woods and begins to pursue them. Everything that follows is a blur to Reed, well everything except for the unforgettable image of a huge creature carrying off his wife into the forest. Reed soon realized that he is not the only one doing the hunting. Something much faster, more relentless, and most definitely not human, has begun to hunt him.

This book is the first Christian Fiction book I remember reading. This book led me to find Ted Dekker because they co-authored a book called House. All of the books that I have read by either author are absolutely captivating. If you have never read one of their books, I highly suggest you go pick one up at your local bookstore or get one online and start reading it today.

Eyes Wide Open by Ted Dekker

This book is about a girl named Christy Snow who is 17 years old and about to die. She is buried in a coffin under tons of concrete and no one knows where she is. That’s how the book starts. It has you interested already, right? In this book, you will follow Christy, and her friend Austin, as they accidentally stumble into the mental ward of a hospital. While there, they are mistaken for delusional patients and in turn, begin to lose their sanity as they receive treatments. But, things are not what they seem.

This book is part of Ted Dekker’s Outlaw Chronicles. This series contains four books, Eyes Wide Open, Water Walker, Hacker, and Outlaw. As of now, I have read the first three books in the series. I still need to read Outlaw but so far, the series has been amazing! Ted Dekker does a wonderful job of keeping you on your toes and making you question what is the real reality in these books.

The Oath by Frank Peretti

The Oath is one of the most recent books I’ve read. It did take me longer than I would have liked to finish but that is to no fault of the book. I simply did not have time to read. It was so interesting though, that I was determined to read it even if it took me forever to finish it.

This story is about the town of Hyde River, the gruesome deaths of many, and an “oath” that the people of Hyde River have taken to hide a secret. When the partial remains of Steve’s brother, Cliff, are found in the woods near Hyde River, Steve opens an investigation. After finding many problems with the theory behind Cliff’s cause of death, Steve teams up with Tracy Ellis, the local sheriff’s deputy. As the number of deaths grows and the people of Hyde River are pressed for information, they start to close ranks. Steve and Tracy get closer to each other as they peel away the mystery and come face to face with the evil behind the many deaths in the town.
