Why Do Atheists Care If People Believe in God?

You are not going to find the answer to this question in this article. Because I really do not know the answer. This is actually a question I have truly never understood. Seeing or hearing atheist try to convert Christians has never really made sense to me. What do you gain by not believing in God? Could it really make your life any better? I cannot answer these questions because I have never been an atheist, but I can respond from the veiw as someone who believes in God.

You see understanding why a Christian would attempt to sway the beliefs of an atheist is easy. In fact, that is an extremely simple concept rooted in the book where our answers come from. First of all the Bible teaches that all Christians need to spread the Gospel. That, in my opinion, is a great reason to care about what others believe.

Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Christians also believe that faith in Christ ultimately makes life better. That includes both making personal life better and the lives of others better. For instance being a Christian comes with the promise of peace. The scriptures tell us that we will be able to give our burdens to the Lord and he will handle them. In fact, Christians are taught to not worry for anything because God will provide all they need. (Emphasis on NEED, this has nothing to do with wants). Along with that, the Bible teaches that Christians should be generous and willing to help anyone, anytime. This should make life better for all people no matter what they believe.

Matthew 6:25-27

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can anyone of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

We also believe that only through faith in Jesus Christ can you be saved from the peril of Hell. I have to say that is another great reason to share your beliefs with other people. The goal is not to get people to agree with you, just because you think you are right. The goal is to save people from a life of eternal damnation. Also, to help them realize that God is the only thing worthy of praise.

So looking at all the reasons we as Christians share our faith it is not hard to understand why we share our faith. A relationship with the God who created you has an impact on your life that nothing else can provide. So when we return to the original question you can begin to see why I am confused. If a belief in God provides a better life, makes people want to be better, help others, and saves you from a life of eternal damnation. What could you possibly gain from not believing in God?

I realize that many atheists do not attempt to win people to their way of thinking. However, there are many that do. They normally talk about things that the world wants you to think makes life better. Like drinking, not waiting until marriage, and having material things. They often talk about the freedom to do what you want. Or even the ability to think freely. Well as a Christian I can tell you I do what I want. I make the choice to stay away from things I believe to be sinful. No one can make do this. Also, no one controls my beliefs. You can never be forced to be a true Christian. You have to make the personal decision to believe in Jesus Christ. So I find any point related to those to be fairly invalid.

I understand that these cannot be the only reasons an atheist may try to sway someone’s beliefs. I have heard these reasons though time and time again. That is what leads me to bring them up here. I still am not sure I could think of any reason you could give me would be valid. Why you may ask. Well, I think the above points explain that very well. The Christian faith has made my life better in so many ways.

I know where I am going when my final day comes and because of that death does not scare me. Plus as Christians, we are meant to help all people and ultimately try to make the world a better place. So I still can not think of a reason why my faith should cause you to think I need to leave it behind. Christianity does not hurt anyone, it actually should make things better.

We can talk history all day and night. Speak of times where the Bible was taken completely out of context. Or times where people lied and claimed to hear from God only to complete their agenda. These things have happened for well ever and they still continue to happen today. I am not going to sugar coat this though. Anyone who takes the Bible out of context, uses the Bible to build themselves a kingdom on earth, or especially spreads hate is not a true Christian. Those people are just pretending and completely confused about what the Bible truly means. So if you think that this article is to condemn atheists and trash talk them you are greatly mistaken.

Jesus dealt with multitudes of people who did not believe that he truly was the son of God. The apostles encounter people at every turn who did not share their beliefs. Even though they do not agree with those people they never stopped loving them. They never stopped having conversations with them. That is the whole purpose of this article. Not to win a soul or even the debate of who is right. I want first for atheists to understand that Christians do love them. More than that though this article comes to open a stream of communication. I personally want to understand the mindset of a devout atheist who attempts to convert Christians and people of other religions.
