Black Mountain is a small town outside of Asheville, North Carolina. Nationally recognized for arts, crafts, furniture, and music, Black Mountain is one of the most charming towns we’ve had the pleasure of visiting. This beautiful town is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Making for stunning views all over town. The surrounding mountains also offer many walking, hiking, biking trails, greenways, lakes, nearby waterfalls and much more!
Black Mountain is just over a 2-hour drive from Knoxville, TN. This makes it perfect for a day trip. Or even a quick weekend trip. With as much as Justin and I like to travel, this town is perfect for short trips. Especially for when the urge to travel hits us and we don’t have a lot of time. This urge hit us a few months ago and this is how we ended up finding Black Mountian.
After visiting this wonderful town, we fell head over heels in love with it. Here is why!
Authentic General Store
With antiquing and repurposing being so popular right now, General Stores, aren’t really true General Stores anymore. They are mostly just nic nak stores with mass-produced replicas of antiques. That doesn’t stop us from loving them and visiting everyone we see.
You can image our surprise when we walked into the Town Hardware & General Store in Black Mountain and found an actual general store! They had everything you could possibly need! From soaps to sinks to coloring books! They had it all! We wandered around this amazing General Store for the better part of an hour taking it all in.
Lack of Chain Stores
Chain stores are great and all. You go to them because you know what you’re getting. There aren’t any surprises. No surprises though is not always a good thing. While in Black Mountain, I can’t remember seeing one chain store. In such an active community, this means lots of wonderful independent stores.
There were several independent outdoors stores, restaurants, and shops. We tried to visit as many stores as possible while there. Only being there for a few hours, we didn’t get to do too much. We loved every shop we visited. Again, the Town Hardware & General Store was amazing. The antique stores were also amazing. The outdoor stores were beyond amazing. It was all great!
THE BEST Cuban EVER!
Speaking of the amazing stores in Black Mountain. The Veranda Cafe & Gifts has the most amazing Cuban sandwich ever! This alone is reason enough to visit Black Mountain. I had never had a Cuban sandwich before but Justin loves them. When he saw the Cuban on the menu, of course, Justin had to try it.
After raving about how delicious it was, I begged for a bite. Man, was I glad that I did! That sandwich was so amazing! The Veranda Cafe makes the mojo sauce from scratch. It’s seriously amazing! Oh, my word! Again, this sandwich is reason enough to visit!
Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters is the mountain range Black Mountain. There is a lovely park close to downtown where you can see them perfectly. The park has a paved loop around a stocked pond. You can fish this pond but only with bait. No lures. This mountain range is stunning! If you don’t go to Black Mountain for the Cuban sandwich, go to see these beautiful mountains!
