If you’ve been keeping up with our blog you know from this post that we love our kayaks. We’ve had these kayaks for a while now. We have learned a few things about what we like and don’t like about them. Since Justin uses his kayak for fishing mostly and I use mine for moving around the lake while he fishes, we decided that Justin needed an upgrade!
Since Justin is, well Justin, he did a lot of research to find out what type of kayak he wanted next. He looked up youtube videos of kayak fishers. Justin looked up reviews on the kayaks he liked most from the videos. Through this whole process, we found that Justin needed a sit on top kayak. Being 6’6”, Justin has had difficulty with his sit-in kayak. Since the kayak is 10ft long, almost 1/3 of that is from the seat back, that did not allow enough space for Justin’s legs to sit comfortably.
We still wanted to get the best option we could for the least amount of money. We picked which kayak we wanted and wait for a sale. One sale came and went but the kayak we wanted wasn’t on sale so we wait some more. The next sale came and our kayak still wasn’t on sale. Since we planned on using our kayaks a lot this summer we opted to go ahead and buy it. The kayak Justin had picked is a Pelican Premium The Catch 100. Since transport the kayaks in our truck bed, we opted to stay with a 10ft option. Any longer than this and we would have to have a red flag on it when transporting them.
Since getting this new kayak, we’ve learned a few things. One of which is, get longer than you think you can get away with. Justin’s hope for this kayak is for him to be able to stand up while fishing if needed. With some practice, Justin is now able to stand up on the kayak on the water. But he is not yet comfortable with fishing while standing. We think this may be because the length plays a huge part in the stability of kayaks. The longer the kayak is, the more stable it is. Our hope is that with more practice Justin will be able to stand while fishing on the newest addition to our kayaks. If that is not the case, we know that the next boat Justin gets should be at minimum 12 foot.
All this being said, if you are looking into buying a kayak, we highly suggest that you find a rental place to test one out before buying. If we’d been able to test this one out before buying, we would have gone with a longer option. Don’t get me wrong, we love this kayak. We just know that it may not have been the absolute best option for us. Especially since we didn’t get this one on sale like we did our others. Thankfully where we live, there are some rental places not too far from us that would allow us to try out different kayaks. This is definitely something we plan on doing for our next purchase!
So if you are looking into kayaks as a boating option for you or your family, be sure to do ALL your research. Don’t get caught up like we did in just wanting a certain thing that you rush into something only to find out it’s not exactly what you were expecting. Once you’ve done your research, and you’ve picked your kayak out, find a place that rents that kayak out. Take it out for a test run. I mean, we all do it with cars. I don’t know of anyone who has bought a car and not test drove it. Why wouldn’t we do the same with our boats? I mean some boats cost more than my car. That’s normal boats, bass boats but there are some kayaks that cost more than my first three cars put together! Do your research and test out your dream kayak.
