Tiny House, Epic Views, and Wild Ponies – Anniversary Weekend Adventure

As many of you already know, last weekend was our first anniversary. To celebrate this, we decided to take a trip to the place where we had our first trip together. This was a very last minute trip. We’d originally planned not to do anything for our anniversary since we’d just taken a trip in March. We’d gotten an anniversary present that we decided to put towards a small trip that made it almost pay for itself. If you don’t already know, we went to Damascus, Virginia. Damascus is only about 2.5hrs from Knoxville so it is a great weekend getaway option for us.

The Tiny House on Creeper Way

We found the Tiny House on VRBO. Our hosts, Becca and Tyler have 4 rentals in Damascus. Three of which are “tiny”. If you are planning on visiting Damascus, we highly recommend using them. Click here to visit their website to check out all their properties. We’d chosen the Tiny House on Creeper Way because who doesn’t want to try out a tiny house? Not only were they quick to respond, but they were incredibly nice. They had the Tiny House ready for us early and even offered to let us check in early since everything was ready. They had stocked the house with some snacks and had a notebook of information on things to do in the area. Becca and Tyler also had a journal for their guests to write about their experience in.

Becca and Tyler had the Tiny decorated simply but still extremely adorable. With such a small space, you don’t want to go overboard. They also had some basic spices in the kitchen in case you wanted to stay in and cook rather than go out to eat. Some of the touches that I loved the most was the throw blanket for the couch and the fan for the bedroom. As all my friends know, I love to cuddle under a blanket while watching TV. I also can’t sleep without my fan. So much, that I packed the mini fans that we use when we go camping. Becca and Tyler had everything a guest could want or need during their visit. I can’t say enough good things about our experience with staying at one of their properties.

Grayson Highlands State Park

As I said in our last week’s post, this trip was mostly about us experiencing a Tiny House and visiting the wild ponies at Grayson Highlands State Park. Since we only had one full day in Damascus, we decided not to ride the Virginia Creeper Trail this time. Riding the trail takes a few hours so that would have been our main activity for the trip. With it being so nice out during our trip, we really wanted to check out Grayson Highlands and boy, oh boy, were we glad we did! It was completely different this visit!

Justin is adamant about visiting your favorite places multiple times. Things are constantly changing and each time you visit, there is something new or different. Justin went to Grayson Highlands with MomLee before we’d gone together. It was pretty foggy then and even foggier when we went together. It looked like a scene right out of the movie Brave! I felt like I was in Ireland. It was awesome! This visit, on the other hand, it was so clear! We found things we’d never even noticed due to the fog during our last trip. Justin and I stumbled upon some amazing overlooks and had our breath taken away by the views! We could see for miles and miles! This was all before we’d even started our hike to see the ponies!

After we’d stopped at all the overlooks we could find, we started on our hike to see the ponies. With the fog missing, it was as if my Disney movie had been turned into a misplaced piece of Arizona. Everything was so dry and dusty. The only thing that reminded us we were still in Virginia was the cold air. Since it was such a nice day out, the park was full of people. That being the case, we had to hike further into the park to find the ponies this time. They’d run off to the total opposite end of their enclosure due to the number of visitors.

Thankfully, everyone is we’ve encountered at the park is extremely considerate of the ponies. We all got our pictures and enjoyed just seeing them. No one tried to touch them or bother them in any way. Sadly, not everyone is respectful of animals so seeing this was a joy. What was really cool about this visit, is that several of the wild ponies had babies! One of which is one of the ones that we’d met on our last trip. Seeing this was totally unexpected and a treat for sure! Again, another reason to keep visiting your favorite places! There will always be something new to see!

Since we were in a little better shape this, and by we I mean me, we decided to continue our hike after seeing the ponies. We made our way to some boulders that we’d seen people climbing on while we were heading to see the ponies. We climbed up them and were greeted with yet another amazing view! From this one, we could see our truck! How cool? From there, we may or may not have gotten a little lost. We’d somehow gotten turned around and ended up off the trail. Thankfully, the paths are well worn, so we just kept looking and found our way back to a trail. As we made our way down the trail back to our truck, we saw some more ponies. We also saw some little streams and some really cool trees that had twisted around themselves.

We hope that this post helps inspire you to visit Damascus. It is definitely one of our favorite places. We also hope that you try out one of Becca and Tyler’s rental properties. We know that we definitely plan on going back and staying at one of their other properties. Thank you so much for reading! If you liked this post, be sure to share it. We are on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. Don’t forget, we also have a YouTube Channel with lots of great content. We made a video of our trip, click here if you’d like to watch it. Thank you again, and God Bless!
