No matter who you are, you are afraid of something. We all have fears. When we are little, we are afraid of the dark or the monster under our beds. As we grow up, we become afraid of rejection or failure. This is so common in our society that we have changed things in order to make sure no one feels rejected or like a failure. So much that we give out participation awards so that no one feels bad if they do not win. Now I think there is a time and place for participation awards. My issue is we have started taking away rewards from the exceptional because those that didn’t try as hard feel bad. Instead of minimizing the great things the truly exceptional do. We should teach everyone how to manage their fears so they can reach their full potential. This will not only help those that are already exceptional do even better, but it will help those that are struggling conquer their fears of failure so they too can begin to flourish.
Being a Christian, the first place I go to when I need help is the Bible. Someone once told me that Bible stands for Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. This is so true. The Bible has something for any and everything you face on this earth. It has the answers to all your questions. Depending on where you are in your walk with God, you may have trouble understanding what the Bible means at times. If you are having trouble, I highly suggest that you speak to your pastor. If you do not have a pastor, speak to someone that is further along in their walk with God than you. They will be able to help you understand The Word. They will also be able to guide you to verses to help you in your situation.
If you are facing fears, here are a few of my favorite verses for when I am afraid. Take these verses and make them your prayer. I do this with not only with Bible verses but with songs. Prayer doesn’t have to be one thing. Prayer is your way of talking with God. It is how you build and grow your relationship with Him.
1. Psalms 56:3-4
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise His word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”
This is a great verse to build confidence in yourself. Not only that but confidence in God to take care of you. Trust God and do not be afraid. He will not give you something that you cannot handle. God knows exactly what you are capable of and what you can take. Trust that. Trust God.
2. 2 Timothy 1:7
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Before Justin and I got married and I was living alone, I prayed this verse quite often. I would be in my apartment alone and here something. I’d start to wonder if it was a serial killer coming to get me. I mean, that is the logical thing to go to when you are living alone right? This verse helped to remind me that God did not create me to allow fears to take over my life. He did not create my mind to go about and make scenarios up that did not have sound reasoning. When our fears start to become illogical, we need to remember this verse. This verse will help us refocus and calm our fears when they become irrational.
3. John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
What a great reminder to not let your fears consume you. God had given us His peace. We have no reason to be afraid of the things of this world. There is no reason for us to allow fear to come in and take over our lives. That is not how God intended us to live.
4. Jeremiah 29: 11
“For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Whenever you start worrying about life, remember, God has a plan for you. He knows the thoughts He has towards you. They are thoughts of peace and not of evil. So take comfort in that and give your worries to God. He’s got this. God’s got you. We have no reason to let fear and worry about what is to come take over our lives. Remember this verse in those times and take peace from it.
